What's the point?

I've learnt that when working with kids you need to provide discipline and consequences when they misbehave. But you also need to provide lots of encouragement and positive feedback when they do things right.

So I find it so irritating that at work there are so many teachers who don't do their job. Some turn up late everyday, some leave classes early, some hardly ever turn up to work, some constantly complain about how it's the most horrible place to work but don't do anything to change their circumstances, some don't prepare work, some don't do marking, some don't write their reports, some turn their backs on kids when trouble occurs in the room and some are a combination of some or all of the above. Then you have people like me and others who do our job. We turn up on time, go to meetings, plan our classes, do our marking, write reports, etc etc. And even sometimes do more than is required.

So why, in an industry that requires us to use positive and negative discipline, are there no consequences for these teachers who are not doing their job. And why don't the great teachers get praised and rewarded for a job well done.

Sometimes I have lazy times too. But these people are seriously terrible at their job (to the point that I believe some are having a detrimental impact on the kids they teach) and nothing happens to them. They also make the job harder for everyone else. And it makes me think - what's the point of doing a good job?

Many good teachers are leaving because they can't stand it anymore!

Welcome!

I need a place to vent my frustrations. And here it is!
